And so the New England trip continues! If you need a recap, head to these two posts: Acadia National Park, Ogunquit.
The week before we left, I asked Mom if there was anything specific she wanted to do on our trip, and the only thing she said was to go to an apple orchard. So, I was on the hunt! After leaving Acadia, we headed to Portland with not much of a plan other than knowing our hotel address. I love traveling with my Mom because she and I usually have the same idea of fun, and both of us love veering off the beaten path. About 40 miles into our drive, we passed a sign for Johnston’s Apple Orchard in Ellsworth, ME. A quick u-turn and multiple squeals later, we were driving down a dirt road in search of apples! To our delight, 1.5 miles later, the dirt road dead ended into rows and rows of trees covered in apples. The owner told us there were about 10 different varieties and to pick whatever and wherever we wanted. We picked a grocery bag full, knowing realistically we couldn’t put that many apples in our suitcase. The experience was all we wanted, and the apples sure tasted sweet as we drove the rest of the way to Portland.
Here’s what I saw on an overcast October day in Ellsworth, Maine:
