Best of 2017

In college, I majored in English Literature. People often laugh when I tell them that fact – expecting me to have said I studied photography. After college, I even taught high school English for a semester before leaving for my role as Governor Scott’s photographer. While I dream of someday going back to school and relearning the basics of photography from start to finish, I am grateful for my English Literature degree. In many ways, photography is not unlike literature. It’s all story telling after all, just different mediums.

Did you know that the word photography means to write with light?

In college, I read (a lot of) fiction.

Now, I write non-fiction.

I write true stories of love and growth. Stories that sometimes have had difficult prequels. But most often, I get to write joyful stories. What a job!

A little over a year ago, I decided to launch my business full time, and I can honestly say, I had no clue how many beautiful tales I would get to tell. It has truly been an incredible first year of business!

Below, I have rounded up my favorite images from 2017. Some of these might surprise you. Maybe they’re not the ones you’d think I would’ve chosen. Maybe they’re not the ones that got framed and given as gifts this Christmas. Embedded in this post is not simply well posed, “pretty” portraits, but real moments that tell stories. And, to me, that matters most.

So below, in no particular order. I give you my best of 2017. Settle in, my friends. This is a long one..
